The meeting between The City of Claremont Senior Program Supervisor, Jason Lass, John Ammon and Sandy Hester, CSLA Class 2012 and Vice Chair and Chair of the LA/OC REGION respectively, provided an opportunity to share what CALIFORNIA SENIOR LEADERS ALLIANCE is all about.  A copy of the 2014 CSL Booklet and the CSLA INFORMATION CARD provided a good beginning to open the conversation.  John shared the history of CSL and its   current transition to CSLA.  Sandy shared the strength of diversity of our statewide organization and expressed our desire to establish a mutual supportive relationship with their senior programs.    Continue reading

California's Healthcare Crisis: African Americans Most at Risk

The November 16, 2016, California Health Report, published an extensive article by Dr. Karen Lincoln regarding the increasing need for caregivers throughout California especially, for African-Americans. Karen Lincoln is the founder and chair of USC’s Advocates for African American Elders(AAAE).  Several Senior Leaders are members of AAAE and they worked extensively with CSLA around our training initiative for California’s Coordinated Care Initiative (CCI).  AAAE and CSLA were funded by the SCAN Foundation to do this important work.  Dr. Lincoln is also the Director of the USC Hartford Center of Excellence in Geriatric Social Work. A member of the California Task Force on Family Caregiving, and Associate Director at USC’s Edward R. Roybal Institute on Aging. Continue reading

Meet Fred Davis: The Advocate Skydiver

  Southern California San Diego Region members frequent and have meetings at the Gary and Mary West Senior Center in San Diego.  One of the more recognizable faces at the center is Fred Davis. Fred is a member of CSLA’s Class of 2014 and is also one of our Senior Leaders that serves on the California Senior Legislature (CSL).  He is a leading figure on the Civic Engagement Committee and is actively involved in the Greater San Diego Senior community as a tireless advocate on behalf of causes that actively affect the wellbeing of seniors, particularly those struggling to get by on limited financial resources.     Continue reading
